Last week Richard and Joe welcomed security expert Shawn VanDiver to discuss the challenges of national cybersecurity. Mr. VanDiver is a 12-year Navy veteran, the President of VanDiver Consulting, and Director of the Truman National Security Project San Diego chapter. At VanDiver Consulting, Shawn helps elected officials, non-profit organizations, candidates, and businesses broaden their public profile, realize their goals, and collaborate with key stakeholders to achieve excellence in public safety and crisis communications. Among several certifications, he is an ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP), IAEM Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), and ABCHS Certified in Homeland Security (CHS-V). He also serves on several boards and committees for national and international homeland security, emergency management, critical infrastructure protection, human trafficking, and security professional organizations and writes for Inside Homeland Security magazine. He has been published in local, national, and international outlets, including the San Diego Union Tribune and The Daily Beast. Locally, he serves on the San Diego Lawyers Club Human Trafficking Task Force, the Veterans Democratic Club Executive Board.

Richard, Joe, and Shawn discussed the future challenges of national cybersecurity. They also discussed cyberwar and the documentary “Zero Days” by Alex Gibney, that tells the complete story of Stuxnet, a piece of self-replicating computer malware that the U.S. and Israel unleashed to destroy a key part of an Iranian nuclear facility, and which ultimately spread beyond its intended target. In addition, they discuss the Truman National Security Project.

The Truman Project unites more than 1,500 veterans, frontline civilians, policy experts, and political professionals with a shared worldview: America is strongest when we utilize all of our tools – defense, diplomacy, development, and democracy – to engage the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

Recently the Truman Project hosted an informal gathering of some of America’s top military, intelligence, law-enforcement, political and scientific minds at the home of former San Diego Port Commissioner Laurie Black and her partner Stephen Skinner, chief information officer for First Team Real Estate to discuss cybersecurity.

In an upcoming event, the San Diego chapter of the Truman Project will have a Memorial Day Sunrise Rose Ceremony to decorate the graves of those buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

Shawn VanDiver was born in Springfield, Illinois and moved to sunny California at the age of 3. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and served for just over 12 years. While serving, he attended National University and that Naval Post Graduate School achieving multiple degrees, certificates, and 25+ civilian certifications in homeland security, emergency management, critical infrastructure protection, and anti-terrorism. He is adjunct faculty in San Diego State Universities Graduate Program in Homeland Security. When not trying to change the world, he prefers to spend time with his 8-year-old son, Ryan, who is debating between careers as a Navy engineer / scientist / astronaut or a pirate.
