San Diego Union-Tribune Austin Beutner and Bill Powers on Scuba Diving in San Diego

Richard and Joe welcomed two guests, Austin Beutner, the CEO and publisher of both the Los Angeles Times and the San Diego Union-Tribune, and Bill Powers, master diver, scuba instructor and proprietor of Powers Scuba.

New U-T San Diego Publisher Photo Austin BeutnerMr. Beutner received his bachelor’s in economics from Dartmouth College, and is known for being the first Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles. In the 1996, he was one of the founders of Evercore Partners, an investment banking group, which has since grown to 28 offices globally. In 2014, he acquired the reins as CEO and publisher of the Los Angeles Times and then went on to do the same with the U-T San Diego in May 2015.

Immediately after acquiring the U-T Tribune, the purchaser, Tribune Publishing, changed the paper’s name back to its historical name “The San Diego Union-Tribune,” which was founded in 1868. Tribune Publishing also owns The Chicago Tribune, The LA Times and the Baltimore Sun. Tribune’s strategy is to consolidate operational expenses across the papers to improve profitability.

Bill Powers

bill-powersBill Powers passion is in the water. With 4000+ dives, he is classified as a Master Scuba Diver Trainer. Founder and organizer of Power Scuba in 2008, he has since retitled himself as “Supreme Benchwarmer” with the group. However,he is no slouch when comes to impressing upon divers the importance of safety. Still actively diving, Mr. Powers can also be found participating in the online community with helpful tips and safety reminders for divers of all experience levels.
