Honoring Theodor Geisel, Dr. Seuss at the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla

Ted Geisel had a favorite booth at the La Valencia Hotel, and his wife Audrey, closest friends and family gathered together on Sunday July 8th, 2012 to dedicate a plaque to the beloved man whose pen name was Dr. Seuss. The idea of a plaque was the brainchild of Richard’s co-host Joe Vecchio, and the event was 8 years in the making. The plaque will reside in Geisel’s favorite booth in The Whaling Bar so diners will know that they are sitting in a special place. The plaque reads:

IN HONOR OF Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss). In deep gratitude for all of his many wonderful books, written and illustrated at his La Jolla residence from 1948 to 1991 and enjoyed the world over by millions of children and adults alike. You are seated at the table that was his favorite.”

This quote is from Dr. Seuss’s last book Oh, the Places You’ll Go! published in 1990.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”

Diane Bell from the San Diego Union-Tribune chimes in on the Dr. Seuss plaque dedication at the La Valencia Hotel.

Dick Enberg gives the plaque a mention at a baseball game in San Francisco in July 2012.
