Dr-AshleyJoe Vecchio welcomed Dr. Ray Ashley, Executive Director and Curator of Ships for the Maritime Museum of San Diego, and Dave MacVean, Founding Principal of Collins MacVean, LLC. Dr. Ashley grew up in San Diego and earned his undergraduate degree from UC San Diego. His masters degree was earned at East Carolina University, and he studied history at Duke University for his PhD. Before graduating from high school he was already sailing, spending his senior year at sea. He has sailed tens of thousands miles in ships ranging from 25′ sloops to historical square riggers. Additionally, he sails as a relief captain for the vessels of the Maritime Museum.

Mr. MacVean earned a BA in Political Science from UC Santa Barbara and has spent more than two decades in the banking industry. However, his passion lies with the history of seafaring. Currently he holds the position of Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Maritime Museum. He has played a very active role in the museum’s replication project of the San Salvador, the ship the Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed north into San Diego Bay in 1542.
