Fast Girl, Suzy Favor Hamilton

suzy-favor-hamiltonThis show Suzy Favor Hamilton discussed her life, her struggles with bipolar disorder and the work that the International Bipolar Association is doing to help educate people about this illness. Suzy was the US Junior Record Holder in the 1500 meters and won three National Junior Titles at Stevens Point Area High in Wisconsin. From there she went on to the University of Wisconsin where she won a record nine NCAA Titles, 32 Big Ten championships, and she was named the Top Female Athlete in Big Ten conference history. Suzy competed in the Olympics in 1992, 1996 and 2000 and was the second fastest American woman in history coming 1/100th of a second behind Mary Decker Slaney. In 2000, Suzy was the fastest woman in the world. She was subsequently named USA Track & Field’s Female Distance Runner of the Year.

Suzy went on to have a successful career in real estate and became the ambassador for the Rock and Roll Marathon Series. She then went through a tumultuous rough patch in her life and has emerged on the other side a certified yoga instructor, motivational speaker and strong advocate for mental health issues. A strong supporter of the International Bipolar Foundation, she often runs distance events on their behalf. In her new book “Fast Girl : A Life Spent Running From Madness” Suzy describes her experiences with bipolar disorder and her struggles during and after running.
