Chad Peace, Jeff Marston and the Right to Vote in a General Election

chad-peaceRichard and Joe were joined by Chad Peace and Jeff Marston of the digital consulting firm IVC Media LLC. Chad is President of IVC Media and also a partner at the San Diego Law firm Peace and Shea LLP. Under Chad’s leadership, IVC has won two Gold Pollie Awards in the categories of Best Microsite and for Best Use of Facebook Advertising, for their successful social media strategy in support of Prop 14 in California. In March of 2014, in his capacity as an attorney, Chad helped the Independent Voter Project file a lawsuit in federal court challenging the constitutionality of New Jersey’s closed primary election system. The lawsuit seeks to protect the individual’s fundamental right to vote in all integral stages of the state-funded electoral process and is currently on petition for writ of certiorari to the United States Supreme Court.

Chad was born and raised in San Diego and graduated with a B.A. in Economics and Philosophy from UCLA in 2002 and received his JD in law from USD School of Law in 2012. He maintains a home in North Park and travels regularly to Sacramento and Washington DC.

jeff-marstonJeff Marston is the Director of Traditional Communications at IVC Media, LLC and is Co-Chair for the Independent Voter Project (IVP). Marston was president and co-owner of Marston+Marston, a full-service public, governmental and community relations firm and, before that, he was senior vice-president of another San Diego-based public relations firm where he spent nearly four years serving as the lobbyist for the City of San Diego in Sacramento. Martson is most well-known for authoring California’s nonpartisan “top¬two” statewide primary system which allows any voter to vote for any candidate, regardless of the voter or the candidate’s party affiliation or lack thereof. Marston was a member of the California State Assembly representing San Diego’s 78th District and is active as the Past President of the San Diego State University Alumni Association.

The Independent Voter Project (IVP) works to represent the rights and access of independent voters to the political process. Currently IVP is working to change the 50% +1 primary election rule which is one of the most important and undemocratic election laws. The rule is not well understood by the electorate. It establishes that when one candidate receives the majority of the vote in the primary election, that candidate is to be declared the winner, voiding the need for a run-off or general election.
