Len Hering San Diego Sustainability ExpertThe guest was Rear Admiral Leendert “Len” Hering Sr. (U.S. Navy retired), the Executive Director of the Center for Sustainable Energy. Len grew up in Portsmouth, VA, and received his B.S. degree in meteorology and oceanography from State University of New York Maritime College. He continued his education after beginning his 32-year career in the Navy, by earning a M.S. degree from the Naval War College in international relations and strategic studies. He also has a MS in business management from Salve Regina University.

During his career in the Navy, Len built a team that reduced energy consumption by almost 42%, diverted 75% waste from landfills, and reduced water consumption by one billion gallons for the Navy within three years. Since his military retirement he has worked to conserve natural resources in the private sector. He founded the San Diego Regional Sustainability Partnership which is the largest sustainability business partnership in San Diego County.
