A World Without Cancer

In 2009 Koman, a two-time lymphoma survivor founded Pedal the Cause in St. Louis. After beating his cancer for the second time, Koman wanted to give back to the Siteman Cancer Center where he was treated. He hoped to ensure that others would meet the same outcome. He founded Pedal the Cause St. Louis with the goal that 100% of proceeds benefit Siteman Cancer Center. Pedal the Cause St. Louis has become the most successful cancer fundraiser in St. Louis. In 2013, the bike ride came to San Diego to raise money for innovative life-saving cancer research conducted by four local world-class beneficiaries: Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Sanford-Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, and Rady Children’s Hospital. 100% of the proceeds stay in San Diego to fund local cancer research. The multi-city cycling challenge has raised approximately $20 million thus far for cancer research in St. Louis and San Diego.

Padres Pedal the Cause LogoIn 2016, the organization formed a new partnership with the San Diego Padres which is reflected in the new name: Padres Pedal the Cause. Many exciting changes accompanied that transition including moving the event to Petco Park where participants ride onto the field and celebrate with their friends and family. To date, Padres Pedal has raised over $4.75 million and funded 31 collaborative research projects at four beneficiaries: Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Rady Children’s Hospital–San Diego. The goal and true hope is that the research funded by Padres Pedal the Cause will ultimately lead to a cure for cancer. This year Padres Pedal the Cause will be held November 11-12.
