Richard and Joe talk baseball and more with the managing partner of the San Diego Padres, Peter Seidler. Peter is the Managing Partner of the Padres ownership group which acquired ownership of the Padres in 2012 and is the lead investor in the ballclub. He currently sits on Major League Baseball’s Ownership Committee and Investment Committee.
The nephew of former Dodger owner Peter O’Malley, he admits that he used to “bleed Dodger blue” but he moved to San Diego when the team was acquired and quickly immersed himself in local causes. The Padres’ ownership group has made a long-term commitment to San Diego, with a focus on three primary priorities: (1) Winning Baseball, (2) Exceptional and Memorable Family-Friendly Fan Experience at Petco Park and (3) Community Leadership and a commitment to positive, sustainable contributions throughout San Diego. Padres ownership can be described simply as consistent supporters of the great San Diego community and passionate, hard-working leaders committed to building a respected and significant MLB ballclub.
Peter Seidler hit a home run with the Nice Guys of San Diego.
In testament to his commitment to the community, Peter was introduced as the 2017 “Nice Guy of the Year” by the San Diego Nice Guys in July and will be honored at their gala on Oct. 28th at the Marriott Marquis. With Seidler, the recognition is two-fold because the Padres have stressed community outreach and Peter and his wife, Sheel, are personally involved in numerous philanthropic projects. The Seidlers focus their philanthropic activities on health and medical matters. They are active with the San Diego Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, The American Cancer Society, The Turning Point Home (a San Diego facility dedicated to treating young women with addiction-related diseases), and various health and wellness initiatives at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Peter also works closely with key San Diego business leaders on projects designed to reverse and significantly improve the city’s homeless problem. With many of the area’s homeless living on the streets near Petco Park, Seidler has become highly involved in the issue. Early this year Peter and restaurateur Dan Shea announced their plan to use large industrial tents to temporarily house the homeless to provide a “bridge” until a permanent solution can be found.
Peter is the founder and Managing Partner of Seidler Equity Partners (“SEP”), a family-oriented private equity fund that provides capital and management support to growing entrepreneurial companies across the United States. SEP was established in 1993 and manages equity capital with a market value of approximately $2 Billion.
Seidler is a member of the Board of Trustees and chairs the Student Affairs Committee at The University of San Diego. He also is a member of the Board of Trustees at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP), an independent nonprofit medical research organization in La Jolla, CA. Peter earned a Bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Virginia, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Los Angeles.
