Richard and guest co-host Michelle St. Clair interviewed retired 11-year NFL football linebacker and 9 year San Diego Charger, Shaun Phillips about his years in the NFL and his rise to success from a humble background. Raised by a single mother in the ‘hood’ of Philadelphia, Shaun Phillips could only dream of one day playing in the NFL and supporting himself and his family. That finally came true.
Phillips was drafted by the San Diego Chargers out of Purdue University in 2004 and blasted into the spotlight in 2006. He made an instant impact and finished his first season as a starter tied for 9th in sacks in the NFL despite missing 2 games with a mid-season calf injury. He was a second alternate for the 2007 Pro Bowl. In 2009, Phillips led the NFL with a career-best seven forced fumbles in 2009 while leading San Diego to its fourth consecutive AFC West title. In the 2010 season, the pass rusher played in all 16 games and finished with 55 tackles and a team-high 11 sacks. He also registered an interception that he returned 31 yards for a touchdown and was named to his first Pro Bowl.
Shaun hasn’t forgotten where he came from. He remembers how lucky he was to have an after-school program in Philadelphia which helped make him the person that he is today. Richard and Michelle discuss with Shaun how to move on in one’s life from one stage to another in a productive and community-based manner.
